This is a rehearsal of a keynote speech I gave to marriage educators, therapists and their spouses. A few years ago, there was some research about the fact that divorce is contagious, meaning the people we spend time with influence our feelings about our relationships. If a friend of ours gets divorced, it increases the odds we will get divorced as well. In other words, friends’ opinions matter.
This works in reverse too.
When a friend’s marriage is in trouble, how we respond as a confidante (or a therapist) can make a world of difference in terms of what our friend decides to do. We can stack the deck in favor of the marriage, or we can inadvertently undermine the relationship. The choice is ours.
Whether you’re a therapist or a friend and relative of someone teetering on the edge of divorce, watch this speech to fully understand how you can greatly help or hinder the marital healing process.
